8bit = 256 colors 24bit = 16.7 million colors
Starsiege uses 8bit. Smacker videos use 256 colors.

I just meant smackers look infinitely more detailed, though I suppose that's because it's technically a video file and not reliant on a custom, limited palette?

The smacker video has its own 256 color palette and is not limited to only the colors defined by the standard palettes in Starsiege. Using all the colors of its own palette alters the menu gui colors. On a side note, Tribes uses far more colors in its .ppl files. That brings up a question...couldn't SS palette files be modified or changed in anyway to rectify that problem?

Even back then Tribes was getting more love than SS.
