Hello fellow Starsiege brothers. Hope all is well. I've noticed numbers are down but that's ok. Remember Starsiege is the same as it was when there were 1000 in the servers. People change. The game remains the same. I have been looking at a game engine called Unity. Unity is an amazing game engine that gives power and understanding for average people to create awsome games. It's for the most part point and click type stuff. Has amazing properties like automatic animation. For example i can upload a model of the apoc. and by using the sequences stored inside of the file. I can make the apoc run, walk etc in unity in a matter of minutes. Networking seems simple to create and I believe a working remake of starsiege could be made very easily. I have a guy helping me now and i'd like you to watch some of his youtube videos.
go to youtube and search for unity robits.......... I would like to keep the structure and integrity of the origional starsiege..same buildings ..same vehicles...but bring them to this new world. Tell me what you think....

I have been looking into unity and I have already made a cool friend who has made some amazing progress in creating spider tanks and mechs. Unity is a self contained program that you can basically create an entire game in an enviroment like the Mission edtior in starsiege. Once you start unity in less then 15 minutes you can have a terrain done with mountains; a skybox with beautiful flares....all point and click no scripting. You can have a spawnable player in the game. The thing that won me over is the animation process. I can take one the old apoc models load it in unity and unity will bone it out. I can save those bones and make any herc after that use those animations. I found some amazing Mech's on unity's website for sale 6 for $100 but for now I'd like to craete something exactly like "City on the Edge." Same hud...same grapics..same buildings.....with a few vehicles and few weapons recreated. I have the mfac and a couple others done by my old friend sirus. From there we build better hercs. better weapons. Unity is designed for those who know nothing about scripting...I"ve been watching videos on it..It looks doable. I will looking into Unreal Engine 4. This will be a community based project...for everyone who loves Starsiege. Watch a vid on how easy networking is for unity.

I think an important thing to find out would be if the Unity Engine will allow you to destroy parts of the models as in Starsiege before doing anything. It wouldn't be Starsiege without that.

Individual parts being blowed off is no problem. I encourage you to get unity free version from their website and install it.....look at their resources store at the AMAZING Shapes and vehicles they have for free. Tons of mech stuff. I have 3d max 2.5 installed now, I have the origional hercs loaded, saving them as .3ds and loading them into unity is no problem. I have a map already made with skybox's and sand desert...recreating city on the edge. My friend gave me a copy of his game that has mechs and spider tanks and weapons selectable in gui. He built all this point and click no scripting involved. His hercs have mounts for weapons etc...they weapons just dont fire. As i progress in unity i will spend $100 and buy 6 hercs that look like the hercs from 2845..you can see them on unity's download page...thet have weapons mounted ready to shoot and kill. Also have shields and individual weapons take damage. In unity each part of a vehicle has a button you can click that makes that part of the vehicle collide with other things. Unique collision so it blows off when shot. Shields may have to be scripted but I will do my best to have a apoc working in unity with 6 mounts, mfac and emp..very soon....I have those two weapons..I will have to recreate the others. You can post whereever you like bev. I will be posting everything for you guys...all the tools and files etc for anyone interested in helping. The person who is going to be BEST at this....is the person who like to watch youtube videos... Watch as many unity videos as you can on youtube;; that's how im learning everything...I can build awsome maps and put shapes in the maps now..networking is a breeze for others to join...player spawn is what im working on and amimating the apoc from the stored animations dynamix did withing the .max file itself...you can just use the origional animations. City on the edge in a new shiny world. Also unity projects can be saved as....V/R ......XBOX one and 360......android...and pc....many more.

As far as the 3D assets go, the original models are very simplistic, low poly creations. Max 2.5 is needed to export to a format Unity can use... But only if you want to keep the low-poly models. Pretty certain that upgraded models could be made in Blender, and 3DS is a common older format so even a simpler program like Milkshape could handle it. If it's the animation sets that are a concern, there's not a huge stretch to do that from the basic modelling. You want some idea of what a community can accomplish, check out the Freespace 2 open source project at hardlight productions. Three skills are difficult to keep involved on any not for profit game project. Coding, Modelling, and Artists. Best of luck. I would love to see an updated Starsiege game.

Hi sorry about not updating in 2 days. I have the apoc in a working map in unity. I was able to import the origional 3d max file (with animations) by using a fbx importer i found on autodesk website. I also have the apoc pilotable. I have some spider tanks etc from unity asset page. Got a few tweaks to do and i'll post a build so you can download and try it out. I got to fix some issues with animation by writing a few simple scripts. But so far so good. Unity has amazing grapics. Also got myself a $1500 computer today a IBUYPOWER with a big screen so i can work on 3 things at once. Lot's of power and lots of ram.

BTW if you get unity get the new free version from their website. I got the terrain made and the apoc pilotable in unity. lots of tweaks need to be done but I want to get the buildings recreated for city on the edge. and Put out some eye candy of what im doing. Looks amazing

Here's a screen shot of what im working on right now in unity. the apoc is pilotable but buggy. It will need some work. I will have to seek the help of the unity comunity to get some of the scripting done. But i'll keep working on it.

solo - this tickles my fancy! i've been looking for an excuse to play with unity.
do you have any grunt work you might be willing to pawn off for anyone who wants to learn the engine? could be beneficial for you to have a hand and i want to learn
cheers

Yea I looked into doing it at one time and I believe SEGA owns the rights to it but don't quote me on that. Decided it would be best to make a very similar game instead of a continuation of the series. But unfortunately I do not have the skills or the time to do it.
