Hi everyone. I've been trying to get Starsiege running on my laptop using the ISO that Hi-rez released a while ago. While using that ISO with just the no-cd patch and the v1004 patch worked for the campaign for a while with only occasional crashes, it's become increasingly unstable as of late. Specifically, when I started to get interested in the multiplayer and mods. I essentially tried to get the Instant AI mod running from here: www.oocities.org/soho/nook/9351/maps/I WAS eventually able to get it to work and spawn bots... But then the game started crashing after 1-5 minutes of play. And these crashes started occurring anywhere in the game, not just the multiplayer. I tried a few things, including the 5-minute crash fix from this forum, but it didn't work. And at this point, even with undoing all the changes I did and setting everything to how I had it before trying Instant AI out, the crashes persist. Even in the campaign. So I figure I'll need to start from scratch. Is there are better way to handle it with Hi-Rez's ISO? Or some other way to install the game while maintaining stable access to everything? (Campaign and mods) It should be noted that I'm not sure if I have the right installer for the v1004 patch, as it has to stop when it asks for CD 2. It still sets the game to v1004 though and made it so the game would run at all.

The ISO from Hi-Rez is the single disc version which is already 1.004. Going over the fixes and whatnot that you have installed, just out of curiosity, in what order did you install the no-cd and the 5-minutes crash fix?

I tried adding the 5-minute crash fix after the no-cd patch. I have since removed it since it didn't seem to have any effect. (Though I still have it saved elsewhere outside of the main Starsiege directory)
Aren't both of them largely just changes to the 'console' file? They both have to be in there basically, right?

Most of the crashes in Starsiege on newer systems have to deal with graphical related issues. I must ask: are you running Starsiege in full screen and if so are you running in openGL or software mode?

I wondering if hes using the older console.cs that comes with the no-cd zip file. That console.cs does not comment out the regOk function. the "new5mincrashfix.rar" down in the app box is the updated no-cd console.cs which has the regOk commented out. That is the only thing I can think of if hes crashing every 5 minutes or so while in a menu.

That is also entirely possible, but I didn't want to rule out the graphical related issues as well.

I set Starsiege to run in full screen, in Software mode.
OpenGL mode makes the menus lag to the point of being almost un-usable. Though maybe I'll try to bear through it and see how it fares in gameplay. >_>
Also, the crashes only occur during gameplay. I've never had it crash in a menu actually.

Yeah, if it is gameplay then I'd wager it has to be the software mode causing graphical issues that then in turn cause the crashes. As far as the menu goes there are a couple of menu modifications developed by one of the community members (PlagueDog) that work better for higher resolutions, quite a bit more stable and more pleasing on the eye.

So what's the ideal setup for OpenGL mode then? Trying it out, it turns out OpenGL mode makes the gameplay unplayable as well for me, in addition to lagging the menus...

Hrm...let's start from the beginning then:
1.) What patches have you installed so far? 2.) What does unplayable mean? 3.) What do you mean by lag? 4.) Are you able to use the mouse appropriately?
I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I'll edit the post if I think of something else to ask.

1. Well, other than the 1.004 patch the ISO comes with and the no-cd patch, I'm not entirely sure. There was a patch I got from the old Sierra help page that isn't able to finish it's install due to requiring the second disc... But I think it had to have done SOMETHING- because I know that it was what allowed my mouse to function within the game. (It's installer specifically says that it's an installer meant to help get Starsiege running on modern computers)
2 and 3. I mean the framerate goes to single digits as far as I can tell. It drastically affects the mouse in both the menus and gameplay.
4. I have already gotten the mouse to work in Starsiege just fine- again via that weird partially-installed patch I got from the old Sierra Help page.

I would strongly suggest trying to reinstall the game entirely and then try adding this file to the main directory of the game. This might help some issues: mem.rar (129.28 KB)
