Since 1998 I, and many other, have spent numerous hours in front of their computer screen playing Starsiege. At one point of my life I was so involved in the Starsiege community my wife threatened to divorce me. We are still together but my feelings for the game haven’t changed.
As many of you fine people know; there are still sites through out the Internet that are as dedicated to Starsiege as they were in 1998: www.starsiegemeninblack.cjb.net, www.sunandshadows.com, http://www.g-xero.com; and many more. Just search for Starsiege. We are still here, still dedicated, still ALIVE, because we choose to be. Games never get old; people get older...
Around 6 May 2004 Tribes one and two were released as free to the general public for a promotion campaign for their upcoming Tribes Vengeance. No mention of Starsiege was ever made. The Grandfather of both these games was left in the shadows of Mars along with those who spent a great deal of their lives playing it.
In the EULA license agreement of Starsiege it states:
The Promise: We want you to be happy with every Sierra product you purchase from us. Period. If for any reason you're unhappy with the Program, return it within 90 days of your purchase for an exchange or a
full refund.
The Only Catch: You've got to tell us why you don't like the game.
Otherwise, we'll never get any better. Send the Program back to us within
90 days of your purchase, postage prepaid, along with your original, dated sales receipt and we promise we'll make things right.
Has anyone ever received an email or letter back from VU on the topic? I, and many of my members here at SsM have written 100’s of letters and never received a reply. If you take over something that has a license agreement aren’t you still bound to that agreement until you make it void? Is it void if we are not happy? Your promise is flawed, we are not happy. Free Starsiege!
Section 5 of the EULA agreement states “Termination. This License Agreement is effective until terminated.” They terminated the license agreements on both Tribes one and two therefore making the engine and counterparts thereof used to create said game null and void and yet bereaving the original license agreement. Therefore since Tribes 1 used the original Darkstar engine to run the game; any such game should be null and void and free as well.
As Starsiege is the predecessor of Tribes one and uses the same “Darkstar” engine it to should be null and void and made free. Due to lack of interest on parties involved that task has yet remained undone and unnoticed.
And as of yet noone has taken the “Free” Darkstar engine from tribes and put their own models and graphics into it and created a new mech type game… Wouldn’t that also be a direct violation of the original EULA agreement…? And yet Tribes is free and so are its counter parts? Make Starsiege Free… Give us the right to distribute it as we want. Please sign this petition with your real name. Thank you Starsiege Fans.
